Encouragement for Marriages

Encouragement for Marriages

With another Valentine's Day come and gone, it's so fun to see how couples are celebrating each other and enjoying a month focused on love! I personally LOVE love, and think holidays like this are so special, and a wonderful time to show your person how much you care about them!

But, the beautiful (and sometimes difficult) thing about a biblical marriage, is that days like February 14th and bouquets of roses every once in a while are simply not enough to sustain the intention God has for marriage. the Bible outlines marriage as a deep, intimate covenant between two followers of Christ. He models marriage through His relationship for us, keeping the Lord at the very center of it.

We hear often how the Bible acts as a "road-map" or a manual, guiding us on how to live a life centered on all that Christ has for us! And though it may seem outdated to us, the Bible still gives us encouragement on how to love our spouses like Christ loves us. Here are some verses to encourage you:

“Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins.” – 1 Peter 4:8

“Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love. Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace.” – Ephesians 4:2-3

“Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate.” – Mark 10:9

"Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God, and whoever loves has been born of God and knows God. Anyone who does not love does not know God, because God is love." 1 John 4:7-8

"Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how you ought to answer each person." Colossians 4:6

When I read these scriptures, I see such beautiful, intentional reminders that God is using His word to give husbands and wives. I am reminded that regardless of anything that happens, love is more powerful that what the world will bring, and that forgiveness is key. I am reminded that at the end of the day, being humble and patient is going to cultivate a marriage built on the fruits of the spirit. I am reminded that when we submit to the covenant of marriage, and seek God faithfully, He will not let us fall. I am reminded that to choose my words carefully, and build my spouse up in everything I do and say. And ultimately, I am reminded that everything God has given me (including my husband) is because HE is good, and HE is faithful, and HE loves me.

So, even though Valentine's Day is over, let's make it a priority to love our spouses like the Bible intended us to EVERY day!
