Anchored

For Christmas, Abi and I received one of those fancy new cordless vacuum with every attachment imaginable. One attachment to clean up spills, another one to groom your dog, even some that we have no idea what to do with. All the attachments, and the vacuum itself, hangs conveniently on a mount in our laundry room for quick access.
When Abi asks me to do things around the house, I try to get them done as soon as possible, because if I don't, they never seem to get done. To save time and hassle, I decided to hang up this mount as quickly as I could, forgoing any instructions and screwing 1” screws into the drywall, calling that sufficient. To my surprise the mount stuck to the wall, for the first three weeks. By then, the wear and tear had caused the screws to become loose, and slowly but surely the entire vacuum, all of its attachments, and the mount, came crumbling to the floor in a dusty embarrassment of plastic. It wasn’t until I used drywall anchors that the mount stood firmly on the wall, unshakeable.
As I continue my walk with Jesus, I cannot help but to be reminded of the similarities. The truth of the matter is that you can choose to live your life without following Jesus, and your life, from a worldly perspective may appear to be just fine.
The problem is not that there is no anchor; we are all anchored into something. Rather, it is what we are anchored to. Money, comfort, and even family can be great things, but are not suitable for placing our trust in. When the wear and tear of life comes; we lose a job, we have an uncomfortable confrontation, or an untimely death of a family member, all of a sudden it may feel as though you are falling without anything holding you up.
Jesus can serve as that anchor who will never fail. Jesus tells us in Mark 7 that, “Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock. And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on the rock.”
Anchoring into Jesus, we can never be shaken by the trials of the world. Though storms may (they will) come, we have something stronger than ourselves to cling to. So, what are you anchored to?
