5 Tips for a Better Quiet Time

Quiet time with the Lord is one of the most precious things that we have as believers. In the toolbox of faith that God equips us with, time alone with Him, in prayer and in scripture, is priceless. But let's face it, life is tough and busy! Prioritizing quiet time, and getting the most out of it is difficult, but so important! Check out these tips for creating a quiet time routine that draws you closer to the heart of God and helps you discover more of what He has for you!

1. Stay Consistent! Trust me, as a mom of a toddler with two demanding jobs, meals to prepare, and an endless list of chores, it can be SO hard to find time (alone!) where I can study the word and talk to my savior. But one thing that has proven sustainable over and over is finding a consistent time + place. This changes as the seasons of my life change, but the routine stays the same! Gone are the quiet mornings on the porch with coffee, and in its place is the couch during nap time (okay, definitely still with coffee), and that is OKAY! Finding the same time and place to do quiet time is so helpful in staying consistent!

2. Before You Begin, PRAY! Okay, okay, I know this seems like a no-brainer! But the simple act of praying before you begin, and asking the Lord to prepare your heart and mind, makes a huge difference. Praying away the tantrums or to-do list, asking the Lord to open your heart and mind for what He specifically has for you today, and aligning your spirit with Him takes your quiet time from good to great!

3. Take Time to Memorize Scripture. Psalm 119 says, “I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you. Praise be to you, O LORD; teach me your decrees. With my lips I recount all the laws that come from your mouth.” The Bible clearly tells us here that keeping the scriptures in your heart and mind is a direct defense against sin and all that the devil throws at you! If memorizing scripture feels overwhelming, start with 1-2 per week! You’ll be surprised how fast it sticks!

4. Find One Thing to Apply to Your Day: If you’ve found a bible study or book of the Bible that you absolutely love, it can feel like you're drinking through a fire hose of incredible truth bombs! You can’t highlight fast enough! But sometimes it can be difficult to step away from your quiet time and apply/remember everything you dug into. I want to challenge you to find one thing each day that you can focus on and work through. Make it a goal to apply that idea, truth, or scripture to the rest of your day!

5. ENJOY! Psalm 119:103 says, “How sweet are your words to my taste, sweeter than honey to my mouth!” Time in the presence of the Lord, studying His word, learning more about His heart and character, and discovering what He has for you is so so sweet. The world loves to push chaos, stress, lists, and exhaustion on us, so much so that quiet time feels like a chore or a “checklist.” But what an incredible privilege it is that Jesus made a way for us to experience the Holy Spirit, and the Living Word. Enjoy it. Don’t take it for granted!

Our prayer is that this helps create a fruitful, sweet time with the Lord each day! If you have more questions, or need help finding a good Bible study, reach out!
